To see the Joseon royal tombs on a trip to Gyeonggi, start with Donggureung in Guri, Seooreung in Goyang and Yungneung and Geolleung (Yunggeolleung) in Hwaseong. All three charge ₩1,000 for individual admission and are closed on Mondays. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, Donggureung is the largest group of Joseon royal tombs, where seven kings and ten queens rest; Seooreung is the next largest; and Yungneung and Geolleung are the tombs of father and son Crown Prince Sado and King Jeongjo. Seooreung has a separate ₩500 fee for local residents, and parking at Yungneung and Geolleung is free. Visiting hours vary by season and entry closes one hour before closing time, so decide your arrival time first. Each tomb has its own royal story, so seeing one per day is realistic.

Which royal tombs can I see in Gyeonggi?

Short answer: Donggureung in Guri, Seooreung in Goyang and Yungneung and Geolleung in Hwaseong. All are Joseon royal tombs inscribed as World Heritage.

Donggureung means "nine tombs in the east", and the Korea Tourism Organization describes it as the largest group of Joseon royal tombs, where seven kings and ten queens were laid to rest over about 450 years. It includes Geonwolleung of King Taejo, Hyeolleung of King Munjong, Mongneung of King Seonjo and Wolleung of King Yeongjo. Seooreung consists of five tombs (Gyeongneung, Changneung, Ingneung, Myeongneung and Hongneung) and is the largest group after Donggureung. At Yungneung and Geolleung, Yungneung of Jangjo (Crown Prince Sado) and Empress Heongyeong and Geolleung of King Jeongjo and Empress Hyoui share one tomb area.

Detailed plans for the three are in the Donggureung guide (in Korean), the Seooreung guide (in Korean) and the Yungneung and Geolleung guide (in Korean). There are royal tombs in Seoul as well, so compare them with the Seonjeongneung Royal Tombs guide and the Heolleung and Illeung guide.

How do the fees and hours of the three tombs differ?

Short answer: Individual admission is ₩1,000 at all three, and they open at different times.

Times and fees in the table are based on Korea Tourism Organization tourist information. Hours may be shortened or adjusted, so call before you visit.

Check before you plan your royal tombs day

  • All three are closed on Mondays, so choose another day.
  • Remember that entry closes one hour before closing time.
  • Group rates apply to groups of 10 or more.
  • Hours at Seooreung may be shortened for operational reasons, so call to check.

Donggureung opens early at 6:00, Seooreung at 7:00 and Yungneung and Geolleung at 9:00. In September and October, all three follow the same timetable as February to May, and from November to January closing moves forward to 17:30.

What stories are told at each tomb?

Short answer: Donggureung covers royal history from the founding through the early and late Joseon periods, Seooreung the family of King Sukjong, and Yungneung and Geolleung the father and son Crown Prince Sado and King Jeongjo.

At Donggureung, the storytelling commentary tells the stories of Geonwolleung of King Taejo, Hyeolleung (where Queen Hyeondeok, mother of King Danjong, is buried), Mongneung of King Seonjo and Sureung of Crown Prince Hyomyeong. At Seooreung, the stories continue with Crown Prince Uigyeong and his brother King Yejong, King Sukjong and Queen Inhyeon, Jang Hui-bin, Royal Consort Suk-bin of the Choe clan, and Queen Jeongseong, wife of King Yeongjo. Yungneung and Geolleung tell the story of Crown Prince Sado, who died locked in a rice chest, and of King Jeongjo, who moved his father's tomb to Hwaseong and built a fortress there.

Some of the commentary mixes dramatized scenes with dialogue and legends, so separate them from historical fact as you listen. Tombs with the same name are different tombs: Gyeongneung at Donggureung (King Heonjong) is not the same as Gyeongneung at Seooreung (posthumously honored King Deokjong).

Who are the Gyeonggi royal tombs good for?

Short answer: Travelers who want to take their time on forest paths hearing the different story of each royal tomb.

Good for:

  • Comparing royal tombs: compare the scale, layout and stone sculptures of the three tombs.
  • History lovers: royal stories run from King Taejo to King Jeongjo.
  • A budget day out: individual admission is ₩1,000 at all three.
