From New Chitose Airport, the JR Rapid Airport costs 1,230 yen (non-reserved) and takes about 37 minutes; airport buses cost 1,500 yen and take 70 to 90 minutes.

On the subway, Sapporo Station to Odori Station is one stop, about 2 minutes, for 210 yen; a weekday one-day pass is 830 yen.

In what order should I walk the city?

Short answer: walk from the Clock Tower to Odori Park and the TV Tower, and give the Beer Museum its own afternoon.

The Sapporo Clock Tower costs 350 yen for adults and 150 yen for university students, and is free for high school students and younger. It is open 8:45 to 17:10, last entry 17:00, and closed 1–3 January. The TV Tower observation deck at the end of Odori Park costs 1,200 yen for high school students and older and 600 yen for elementary and junior high students, open 9:00 to 22:00 with last entry at 21:50.

How do I split 2 nights or 4 nights?

Short answer: 2 nights is a city day plus the Beer Museum; 4 nights adds a day out of town.

With 2 nights, on day one travel in from the airport and walk the Clock Tower, Odori Park and, in the evening, the TV Tower; on day two, add the Beer Museum in the afternoon. Day three is departure, so rest near the station in the morning.

With 4 nights, keep the first two days the same and leave day three free for a trip out to Otaru or Biei. For train and bus times, see how to get from Sapporo to Otaru (in Korean). On day four, eat near your hotel and depart.

How do I get from the airport to the city?

Short answer: the JR Rapid Airport takes about 37 minutes for 1,230 yen; buses cost 1,500 yen and take 70 to 90 minutes.

From New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station, the JR Rapid Airport costs 1,230 yen for a non-reserved seat and 2,230 yen for a reserved seat. The fastest trains take about 33 minutes, and regular rapids about 37 minutes. Airport buses cost 1,500 yen for adults and 750 yen for children and take 70 to 90 minutes depending on the stop and traffic.

The subway is easiest in the city. On the Namboku Line, Sapporo Station to Odori Station is one stop, about 2 minutes, for 210 yen for adults. A weekday one-day pass costs 830 yen for adults and 420 yen for children; on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and 29 December to 3 January, the Donichika one-day pass costs 520 yen for adults and 260 yen for children. More in our guide to getting from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo (in Korean).

What should I eat?

Short answer: spread your meals across miso ramen, soup curry, jingisukan and seafood rice bowls.

Plan Sapporo meals around miso ramen, soup curry, jingisukan (grilled lamb) and seafood rice bowls. Ramen or soup curry for lunch and jingisukan for dinner keeps each meal different.

We don't pick restaurants and prices here; see our dish guides: miso ramen (in Korean), soup curry (in Korean), jingisukan (in Korean) and seafood rice bowls (in Korean).

What should I check before I go?

Short answer: recheck entry requirements and each venue's closing days.

Recheck Japan's entry requirements before you leave. The Clock Tower closes 1–3 January, and the Beer Museum and TV Tower have different last-entry times, so pick just one in the late afternoon.

JR Rapid and airport bus fares can change, so reread the operators' information before you ride. Subway day passes cost different amounts on weekdays and holidays, so choose by the day you arrive.

Before you leave Sapporo

  • Check the Clock Tower's 17:00 last entry and closing days
  • Choose between the JR Rapid and the airport bus
  • Check weekday and holiday subway day-pass prices
  • Check train and bus times for your day out of town
  • Recheck entry requirements on the official sources

Which plan suits my trip?

Short answer: stay around Sapporo Station and Odori, and give day trips their own day.
  • First time in Sapporo: combine the Clock Tower, Odori Park and the observation deck in one day, with the Beer Museum in the afternoon.
  • Coming straight from the airport: the JR Rapid takes about 37 minutes and the bus 70 to 90, so the train is quicker.
  • Seeing the surroundings: with 4 nights, keep day three free for Otaru or Biei.
