Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island resort, all emerald water and pool villas. It combines the white sand of Sao Beach, the Vinpearl resort complex, island-hopping snorkelling, pepper farms and the Duong Dong night market into Vietnam's top island holiday.
It is quieter and more natural than Da Nang, yet world-class pool-villa resorts such as JW Marriott and InterContinental have arrived, earning it the nickname "the better-value alternative to Bali". It suits everyone from honeymooners in luxury pool villas to families at the Vinpearl theme park.
The best season is the dry season from November to April. In the May–October rainy season, heavy afternoon downpours and high waves can restrict swimming, but prices are 30–40% lower and it's quieter.
Visa and entry requirements for Vietnam
Whether you need a visa, how long you can stay and which pre-arrival forms apply all depend on your nationality and the purpose of your trip. Check the official source below, and your own government's travel advice, before you book.

Sao Beach: Vietnam’s finest white sand
Sao Beach (Bãi Sao) in the south of Phu Quoc is a 4 km stretch of white sand. Emerald water and coconut palms make it the classic tropical beach. The waves are gentle and the water shallow, so families and older travellers can swim safely.
Sunbeds and parasols are free, or free with a drink order. Snorkel and kayak rental (USD 5–10 an hour) and jet skis (USD 20–30 for 15 minutes) are available. It is also famous as a sunset spot from 4 to 6 pm, with seafood BBQ restaurants nearby.
Vinpearl: a giant resort complex
This huge resort complex run by Vingroup sits in the north of the island. Five-star hotels, a theme park, a zoo, shopping and a cable car all in one place make it the first choice for families with children.
VinWonders combines rides, an aquarium and a water park for a full day (admission USD 30–50). Vinpearl Safari is an open safari with 3,000+ free-roaming animals and impressive tram tours. Riding the world's longest sea-crossing cable car (8 km) for views over the sea is a must.
Island hopping: snorkelling, fishing and BBQ around three islands
A Phu Quoc island-hopping tour is a day trip by wooden boat to three small islands nearby (An Thoi, Hon Thom and others), with snorkelling, fishing and a seafood BBQ lunch. The coral and tropical fish are beautiful, and lunch is included.
Tours cost USD 20–40 per person (book through your hotel concierge or travel agents in Duong Dong). Booking ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide may be cheaper. Combine it with a sunset cruise (5–8 pm, cocktails included, USD 30–50 per person) for a full day.
Pepper farms, nuoc mam and the Duong Dong night market
Phu Quoc grows Vietnam's finest pepper. At a local pepper farm you can see harvesting and drying and buy pepper (500 g for 80,000–150,000 dong). It is also the home of nuoc mam (Nước Mắm) fish sauce; factory tours and tastings are free, and fish sauce bought locally is far better.
The Duong Dong night market (Dinh Cau Night Market) offers seafood skewers, fried noodles, mango shaved ice and souvenir shopping in one place, from 5 pm to midnight. You can eat well for USD 10–20 per person.

FAQ
Phu Quoc or Da Nang?
Da Nang’s strengths are its variety of sights (Ba Na Hills, Hoi An, Hue) and easy access. Phu Quoc is quieter and closer to nature, with the Vinpearl complex (theme park plus safari). With children, choose Phu Quoc for Vinpearl; for varied sightseeing and food, choose Da Nang.
How do I fly to Phu Quoc?
Direct international flights are often seasonal and limited, so connecting via Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) is usually more reliable. Check for direct flights first when booking, and connect if there are none.
Is the rainy season (May to October) OK?
Heavy rain falls for 1–2 hours in the afternoon, but mornings are usually clear. With rain-proof plans such as your pool villa or the Vinpearl theme park, you can still enjoy it. Prices are 30–40% lower in the low season, but sea swimming at Sao Beach may be restricted by waves.
How do I book an island-hopping tour?
Through travel agents in Duong Dong, your hotel concierge, or in advance on Klook or GetYourGuide. Tours cost USD 20–40 per person, leave at 8 am and include snorkelling at three islands, fishing and a seafood BBQ lunch. Booking ahead is essential in peak season.
Is renting a scooter safe?
A scooter lets you see the whole island in a day (USD 5–8 a day). Carry an International Driving Permit and always wear a helmet. If you’re not used to scooters, Grab or a resort car is safer.
Should I visit a pepper farm?
It’s a short visit of about 30 minutes, but you see how Vietnamese pepper is produced and can buy it at local prices (less than half the price of imports), which makes a practical souvenir. Several farms are 10–15 minutes by Grab from Duong Dong, so combine one with the night market.
