Unhyeongung is not a royal palace like Gyeongbokgung where a king lived. It was a "gung" for relatives of the king: the private residence where the family of Heungseon Daewongun lived. King Gojong was born and raised here until he became king. It is a historic site of great significance, since most of the reform and isolationist policies of late Joseon began here.

What to see: Norakdang, Noandang and Irodang

The main buildings of Unhyeongung are Noandang and Norakdang, completed in September 1864, and Irodang, added six years later.

  • Norakdang: The central building of Unhyeongung, used mainly for big events such as family 60th-birthday celebrations and banquets.
  • Noandang: Used by Heungseon Daewongun as his sarangchae (men's quarters). It is a typical Korean tiled-roof house with delicate, beautiful eaves corners.
  • Main gate: There were four gates at the time, but only one remains today.
