Sewoon Plaza (Sewoon Sangga) is Korea's first all-in-one electronics arcade. It opened in 1968, and shops selling electrical and electronic parts, audio equipment and lighting, along with craftsmen who work on the equipment, are still gathered here. It is about 1.2 km east of Euljiro 1-ga Station in a straight line, between Jongno and Cheonggyecheon Stream.
History: from an empty lot to the first electronics arcade
The site of today's Sewoon Plaza was an evacuation clearance zone that Japan left empty in 1945 in case of Allied bombing. After the Korean War, people who had lost their homes built shacks and lived here.
In 1966 the area became South Korea's first urban redevelopment project zone. It was designed by architect Kim Swoo-geun, and Sewoon Plaza was completed just two years later, in 1968. Companies such as TG Sambo Computer, Hancom and Commax are known to have started here.
