Background and culture

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is a free-form curved building designed by Zaha Hadid that opened in 2014. Built on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium, it is symbolized by its LED rose garden at night and its concave rooftop walkway. It sits in the middle of the Dongdaemun shopping district, where fashion wholesale malls run 24 hours, so a route of early-morning shopping, photos at DDP and a walk along Cheonggyecheon is popular. Tickets for the Design Museum and design market are separate each time.

Dongdaemun's late-night wholesale hours run roughly from 23:00 to 06:00, and some stores restrict entry for general tourists. Special exhibitions at the design museum inside DDP require a separate ticket each time, with discounts for children and youth. The observation café at Doota Tower and Cheonggyecheon are popular for an evening walk.
