A trip to Osaka means Japan's capital of food and the base for exploring the wider Kansai region. As the saying kuidaore ("eat until you drop") suggests, food is everywhere: takoyaki and okonomiyaki in Dotonbori, kushikatsu in Shinsekai and fine dining in Umeda.

Osaka's biggest strength is its location. From Shin-Osaka, the JR and Shinkansen hub, Kyoto is 15 minutes away, Kobe 20, Nara 40 and Hiroshima 1 hour 30, so all of Kansai is within day-trip range. Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is 15 minutes from central Osaka by train. In four days you can enjoy Osaka, Kyoto and Nara.

Osaka Castle, the Shinsaibashi shopping street, the Kaiyukan aquarium in Tempozan and the night views of Umeda: Japan's second city offers culture, shopping and nature as well as food.

Visa and entry requirements for Japan

Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi: the heart of Osaka

Dotonbori is the core of any Osaka trip. Below the Glico Running Man neon sign, takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu shops line the canal. At night the neon reflected on the water rivals the night views of Shibuya in Tokyo.

Shinsaibashi is the shopping street just north of Dotonbori, where Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Uniqlo and Beams sit side by side in a 600 m arcade. Amerikamura (Amemura) is a subculture district packed with vintage and streetwear shops and great takoyaki.

Osaka Castle and Shinsekai: history and everyday culture

Osaka Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, is one of Japan's iconic castles. From the 8th-floor observation deck of the main keep (admission 600 yen), you can look out over the city. The Nishinomaru Garden around the castle is a top cherry-blossom spot.

Shinsekai is a treasure house of Osaka's everyday culture, lined with original kushikatsu restaurants (Daruma). Tsutenkaku, a 108 m observation tower with a statue of Billiken (the god of good luck), is its landmark. Fugu (pufferfish) and doteyaki are other Shinsekai specialties.

Universal Studios Japan (USJ)

A world-class theme park 15 minutes from central Osaka by train. Super Nintendo World (Mario adventures), The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park and the Hollywood area are the key zones.

  • 1-day ticket: 9,500–10,800 yen (prices vary in peak season)
  • Express Pass: an extra 7,000–20,000 yen to skip the lines on major attractions; essential on weekends and in peak season
  • Budget for a family of four: 40,000–50,000 yen for tickets plus 30,000 yen or more for food and souvenirs
  • Buy and book in advance on the official app (on-site tickets often sell out on the day)

Kyoto and Nara: Kansai day trips

Kyoto is 14 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen (or 15 minutes by JR Special Rapid). Fushimi Inari (a thousand torii), Kiyomizu-dera, Gion (the geisha district), Arashiyama (the bamboo grove) and Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) are the highlights. A kaiseki lunch (5,000–15,000 yen) is best enjoyed in Kyoto.

Nara is 40 minutes from Osaka and 30 minutes from Kyoto. About 1,200 deer roam Nara Park freely, and Todai-ji (the Great Buddha) and Kasuga Taisha are the highlights. Ideal for a day trip.

FAQ

Should I base myself in Osaka or Kyoto?

Either works. Osaka is best if you are focused on food, shopping and USJ; Kyoto suits travelers focused on traditional culture and ryokan stays. Generally, three nights in Osaka with a day trip to Kyoto is the most efficient.

Do I really need a USJ Express Pass?

On weekends, school holidays and in peak season, waits at Super Nintendo World and the Harry Potter area reach 90–180 minutes. At those times, an Express Pass (7,000–20,000 yen) cuts waiting time dramatically. You can manage without one on off-peak weekdays.

Kansai pass or JR Pass?

If you are only traveling between Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara, the Kansai Thru Pass (2 days, 4,800 yen) is economical. If you are also going to Tokyo or Hiroshima, the JR Pass (7 days, about 50,000 yen) is better value.

Okonomiyaki or takoyaki?

It is a matter of taste. Takoyaki are bite-sized snacks of octopus and batter with mayonnaise and bonito flakes; okonomiyaki is a meal of vegetables and seafood that you grill yourself. Both are must-tries in Osaka.

Can I see Osaka Castle for free?

The Osaka Castle Park grounds are free. The exhibits inside the main keep cost 600 yen. Holders of the Osaka Amazing Pass get free entry to the keep too.

How do I eat Kobe beef from Osaka?

Kobe Sannomiya Station is 20 minutes from Osaka by JR Special Rapid (410 yen). A common day trip is to see Kitano Ijinkan (the Western-style houses) and Nankinmachi (Chinatown), then eat at a nearby Kobe beef restaurant (Ichiryu, Wagyu Dining).
