On Ishigaki, put Kabira Bay and the Taketomi ferry on different days.

For a longer stay, the backbone is: arrival day near town (Fusaki and the public market), the next day Kabira Bay, and the day after that Taketomi by boat from Ishigaki Port. Iriomote is yet another day; don't attach it to a town day.

With 2 nights, skip the forest island, and add Taketomi after Kabira only if return boats are still running on the timetable. For domestic flights, see the timetable.

Don't put the bay or a boat into your departure morning; pack the night before. If the market is closed on a Sunday, swap to another meal, and put heavy meals after you are back in port.

Visa and entry requirements for Japan

Whether you need a visa, how long you can stay and which pre-arrival forms apply all depend on your nationality and the purpose of your trip. Check the official source below, and your own government's travel advice, before you book.

  • 2 nights: Town, then Kabira the next day
  • 4 nights: Bay, boat, Iriomote

Where should I go, and on which days?

Short answer: with 2 nights, town and Kabira; with 4 nights, Taketomi and Iriomote on separate days.

With 2 nights: day one is the airport, Fusaki and the market; day two Kabira Bay; leave on the morning of day three. Add Taketomi on the afternoon of day two only if return boats remain. With 4 nights: day one town and the market, day two Kabira, day three Taketomi and day four Iriomote, then departure. Don't stack all three in one day. Fit meals between moves: market lunch, dinner after returning to port, a bite at the terminal before sailing.

The public market may close on the second and fourth Sundays. Opening hours can differ between the operator's page and the city's page, so go by the door on the day. Choose Yaeyama soba at a place that finishes before your boat; check whether soki soba comes with ribs on the noodles, whether island tofu is served cold and whether gurukun is that day's fish. Go only by prices posted in the shop; there is no official ranking.

How do I get from the airport to town?

Short answer: a taxi to the Remote Island Terminal is estimated at 25 minutes and 3,500 yen; buses 4 and 10 also run.

The airport's taxi estimates are 25 minutes and 3,500 yen to the Remote Island Terminal, 30 minutes and 4,300 yen to Fusaki Beach Resort, and 40 minutes and 5,600 yen to Kabira Park. If the meter differs, the meter applies. Azuma Bus routes 4 and 10 pass the airport, the bus terminal and the Remote Island Terminal; route 9 goes to Kabira via Fusaki, and route 11 leaves the airport for Kabira at 12:15 and 15:00. Check fares in the timetable dated 1 April 2025.

The market is about 9 minutes (about 650 m) from the Remote Island Terminal. Boat times are on the operators' timetables. If you arrive late, move the bay to the next day. Check driving times on a map and boat times only on the timetable.

How do I choose where to eat?

Short answer: choose places that finish before your boat and check the day's menu.

There are five things to check: whether you will finish before your boat, whether the noodles and broth you want are on the menu, whether last orders are still open, whether payment works for you, and whether cold dishes can be kept. Where the tourism association lists hours for a shop, treat them only as an example, not a ranking, and don't follow blog rankings.

For an evening stroll nearby, go to Fusaki. At Kabira, follow the signs on site about entering the water. Taketomi is by boat from Ishigaki Port, and Iriomote is another day. For jellyfish, check only that day's beach signs. If Sukuji Beach has no stop on the bus timetable, go by taxi or rental car, and check driving times on a map.

How should I plan my departure day?

Short answer: check that your boat and domestic flight don't overlap on the same day.

If they don't fit, finish the islands the day before and keep your departure morning for the airport only. Don't put Kabira into your departure morning. Taxi estimates are only a guide; allow for delays separately. For carrying market food on board, check your airline's rules. Check stay requirements for Japan and typhoon information before you travel.

If signs on site or the timetable differ from this plan, follow them. Don't plan around fines, boat minutes or rainfall figures. Look for notices at cash-only shops, and if things on site differ from estimates, the meter comes first.

Before you leave Ishigaki

  • Check how you are splitting 2 or 4 nights
  • Check taxi estimates and the bus timetable
  • Check the market's second- and fourth-Sunday closures
  • Check typhoon information

Which plan suits my trip?

Short answer: with 2 nights, town and the bay; with 4 nights, the boat and the forest island on different days.
  • 2 nights: split town and Kabira, and add Taketomi only if return boats remain.
  • 4 nights: give Kabira, Taketomi and Iriomote a day each.
  • Afternoon arrival: move the rest to the next day and see only Fusaki and the market on day one.
